RFS-X Glossary

Key terms and metric definitions

Plain-language definitions for the public dashboard and technical users. This page gives search engines one stable place to understand the exact RFS-X vocabulary.

RFS - Resonant Field State scalar

The primary composite output of RFS-X. It combines trend strength, momentum, volatility, and coherence inputs derived from solar wind Bz, Kp, proton flux, CME speed, CME rate, X-ray flux, and cosmic ray proxy data. The RFS scalar is bounded from 0 to 2, with values near 1.0 representing the historical baseline.

CPS - Coherence Pattern Signature

A 0-to-100 score measuring the simultaneous activation of three independent coupling-state signals: CCI Geometry, GOES Hp30 deviation trend, and USGS ground station coherence. Full Pattern means CPS is 78 or above.

Phase-Lock R

A Kuramoto order parameter computed per frequency band using Hilbert-transform phase extraction after bandpass filtering. RFS-X computes Phase-Lock R across Sub-ULF, Long-ULF, and Pc5 bands for driver, responder, and full-channel subsets. Values run from 0 to 1.

dM - Momentum Component

The momentum sub-component of the RFS scalar, exposed as a standalone metric. It is computed from Kp, proton flux, CME speed, and CME rate. Positive values indicate solar driving input above the 40-year baseline; negative values indicate below-baseline input.

CCI Geometry

A coupling-geometry score combining southward IMF Bz and GOES Hp30 deviation. It measures whether the current solar wind and geosynchronous magnetic configuration is favorable for efficient coupling into the near-Earth system.

FGS - Field Geometry Score

A composite geometry indicator combining CCI Geometry, GOES Hp30 deviation, and Bz coupling score. It is presented on a 0-to-100 scale with qualitative bands from unfavorable to highly favorable.

MCI - Magnetosphere Coherence Index

A coherence measure comparing geosynchronous orbit response and ground magnetic field response. High MCI indicates integrated response across the altitude stack; low MCI indicates weaker layer-to-layer coupling.

Full Pattern

The CPS classification for scores of 78 or above. It indicates that all three CPS signals are simultaneously active and is the rarest operational CPS state.

Phase Band

The qualitative classification of the current RFS state: Green, Yellow, or Red. Hysteresis is applied to prevent rapid threshold oscillation.
